The I Love Kensington Archive Project
We live in a suburb with a ‘village’ feel steeped in history. In fact some of the earliest signs of settlement by miners and mine magnates took place in Kensington as part of the establishment of the Economic hub of Africa, Johannesburg. We live in an incredibly unique neighbourhood where residents prefer to remain rather than relocating to other suburbs in Johannesburg, quite unique in this day and age where the demographics of every suburb in South Africa is constantly changing, Kensington in many ways bucks this trend with families residing in Kensington for 80 years or more. We have some of the top schools in South Africa, that date back to the early and middle 1900s, so why not record all of this information in one place where it is accessible to all. The ‘I Love Kensington Archive Project’ aims to do this - to document our rich history both in pictures, newspaper articles and personal accounts representing the various histories and experiences of our residents.
